Research and Projects in TCM with Integrative Medicine
Research at SWISS TCM UNI aims to apply findings effectively, expediently, economically and practice-oriented in teaching and service for prevention, treatment, and aftercare of diseases. This is also because we stand for a strong TCM with integrative medicine.
All research activities are based on the foundation of scientific independence, ethics (GCP/GEP), research culture, publicity, evaluation, and utilization.
Research in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Traditional Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) combines with conventional medicine (orthodox medicine). This is also reflected in clinical research. SWISS TCM UNI, therefore, strives to filter out from the multitude of standardized research methods those that are suitable for clinical TCM research.
SWISS TCM UNI promotes clinical research at the highest level. As a result, the university TCM institute will establish itself internationally and become an important contact in the TCM community.

The research projects include the following main areas:
- Basic research (TCM classics and history).
- Clinical research (primary, secondary, tertiary prevention, rehabilitation)
- Standardization of research (TCM diagnosis, therapy concepts, acupuncture, TCM prescriptions)
- Use of the most appropriate standardized research forms for TCM research
A special concern of SWISS TCM UNI is to promote young scientists on a high level. For example, the Doctoral Agreement was developed as a personal planning tool from registration to submission of the dissertation. The doctoral agreement is a proven means to accompany doctoral students professionally and personally and to promote positive developments.
The implementation of TCM research projects
The following figure shows the flow of a research project. The individual research activities are shown graphically.
- evaluation (research proposal)
For each research idea, a research proposal must be written in German or English. - evaluation (examination of the research proposal)
After receipt of the research proposal, the academy management forms a research commission. This committee examines the research proposal according to defined criteria. - ethics guidelines (approval)
The research committee makes a recommendation to the academy management. The latter reviews the application, among other things about compliance with applicable ethics guidelines, and decides whether to accept or reject it. If there are objections, the application must be revised and resubmitted. In case of rejection, the Academy Management informs the applicant and the Research Commission with written reasons. - Monitoring and Rankings (Project Implementation)
If the application is accepted, the applicant and the Research Commission form a research team. The Research Commission supports, coordinates, and monitors the process. For projects over several years, the research team reports every 12 months. After completion of the research project, the results are prepared for publication as a scientific paper. Thus, they can be presented at congresses or used in education and training.
